Prime Minister will be the Chairman of the National ICT Committee

On February 17, 2012, Government Office releases Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan’s opinion on the preparation of altering the National Steering Committee on ICT into National ICT Committee chaired by Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.

The news has been shared by Dr. Nguyen Minh Hong, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications in the event “Gap Go ICT Xuan Nham Thin” (ICT Meeting in the Year of Dragon) on February 17, 2012 in Hanoi.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hong said the nomination and selection of members for the National ICT Committee will receive careful consideration so that, as much as possible, resources from all over the nation, enterprises and society can be mobilized to successfully implement the project “Turning Vietnam into a strong ICT country” and the country can be strengthened by ICT.

2011 is said to be the first year of implementing the project and several national programs of ICT application development. Due to many objective and subjective difficulties from the world and within the country, ICT sector growth remains relatively high but not as expected. At the summation meeting on the project’s one-year implementation held by the National Steering Committee on ICT in the beginning of 2012, MIC confirms there are still a lot to do to achieve the project’s objective.

The formation of the National ICT Committee is expected to empower Vietnam’s ICT development since the Congressional Resolution 4 of the Vietnam Communist Party has officially confirmed ICT is the most important infrastructure of all and the project “Turning Vietnam into a strong ICT country” is the overarching mission for the next 10 years in order for Vietnam to be in the top ICT nations.

Dr. Mai Liem Truc, the former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, said: “There will be a huge leap in Vietnam ICT sector in 2012, leading to a new stage of the country ICT’s development. By the end of the year, the establishment of the National ICT Committee will be voted the number one event in Vietnam’s ICT sector in 2012

The National Steering Committee on IT (NSC) was established by the Prime Minister on April 2, 2008 and chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan. NSC has worked hard to advise the Government on policies and strategic solutions to promote IT application and development; to help the Prime Minister coordinate the implementation of strategies, programs, plans, key projects in the country’s IT application and development; and to inspect, supervise, Review the performance of IT application and development and report periodically report to the Prime Minister. However, in the context of that the implementation of ICT application and development to form e-government has encountered more and more difficulties, it is said that the direct involvement of the government’s top leader is needed to achieve these objectives.

“Gap go ICT Xuan Nham Thin” (ICT Meeting in the Year of Dragon) is an annual event held by the Vietnam Association for Information Processing (VAIP) to create a bridge for domestic and foreign ICT agencies, enterprises to have the opportunity to interact and to initiate the chain of events and activities for next year.
